Sleep is one of the most important keys to our overall health, and we need to make sure we are setting ourselves up for a good night of sleep.
Sleep is arguably the basis for our mental (and sometimes) physical state while we are awake. It is a natural process that our body needs to regenerate itself, and therefore we need to prioritize our sleep to set ourselves up for success. To ensure ourselves the best possible sleep, there are several things we should do before we go to sleep. Here is a checklist to go through before it is time to hit the hay.
Have Your Morning Planned Out
One of the worst parts of the day can be the scramble you have to go through in the morning or the general feeling of uncertainty about what to do when you first wake up. This uncertainty can also keep us up at night in anticipation of the morning. This is why it is a good idea to have everything ready to go for the morning. Plan out your routine ahead of time and you will not have to worry about this as you are trying to sleep.
Put Away Your Electronics
Electronics such as our cell phones are key parts of our work communication and social lives. These things unfortunately can cause us stress at times as well, and stress is the last emotion we need to be feeling when it is time to wind down. An hour before bed, put your electronics away and do not use them until the next day. This will help you be in a more mindful state before bed.
Have a Set Bedtime
One of the most helpful things you can do involving your sleep is by making it a habit. Be aware of your body’s natural sleep cycle and try to listen to it. Keep yourself disciplined and realize that when the clock hits a certain time, you need to go to sleep. This may be difficult initially, but once it becomes a habit, you will set yourself up to getting the right amount of sleep nightly with times that fit your schedule.
